Workshops
Thank you for considering the Winston-Salem Journal to provide an educational workshop for your teachers/staff.
NIE Workshops will emphasize study skills, present varied approaches to reading, demonstrate ways to develop vocabulary,
outline strategies for improving comprehension, practice higher order thinking skills, and demonstrate ways to integrate
reading and writing into a range of subjects using the newspapers.
Workshops are planned with activities to apply to different areas of the state curriculum: language arts, social studies, math, science, and health. A qualified Newspaper in Education instructor(s) will lead the workshop. The workshops are very interactive and usually a lot of fun.
Comments from teachers who have attended an NIE workshop
- "I learned how to use sports to teach math and PE."
- "I received ideas for higher order thinking skills - humor."
- "Lots of information and ideas; resources; lesson plans."
- "Practical resources that are ready to use - lots of hands-on, fun activities."
- "New spin on literature circles - the varied ways to present the newspapers."

Workshop Guidelines
- Workshops can be 2, 3, 4 or 10 hours long. They will be held between the hours of 9 a.m. and 7 p.m.
- A $10 non-refundable donation per participant is requested within 7 days before the workshop is scheduled to take place for the 2, 3 and 4-hour courses. The $10 donation will cover the cost of the 125 newspapers plus the ready-to-use teaching materials distributed at the workshop.
- Ten-hour workshops require 2 days and the cost is approximately $45, which includes a notebook with over 500 pages of NIE activities in all subjects.
- A workshop can have up to 20 participants; however, the minimum is 5 participants.
- Workshops can be on 2 or more subjects, but workshops that are less than 10 hours should have a grade-level focus, such as K-3, 3rd-6th or 4th-8th or 6th-8th or 9th-12th.
- The best locations are classroom settings with tables and space enough to spread out, such as a cafeteria, Media Center or classroom.
- With prior approval from your local school system, you can apply your workshop time toward the units of credit that applies to the new requirements for reading instruction for K-8 teachers.
