Journal in Education (JIE) is a program run by the Winston-Salem Journal in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Working with the national organization Newspapers in Education, JIE is devoted to helping a new generation become savvy newspaper readers.
JIE works with local teachers to bring newspapers into the classroom. Once a week, children who have been enrolled in our program will each receive a copy of the Winston-Salem Journal, which their teachers can use in a variety of ways to develop lesson plans.
From our Business section, children can learn about numbers, economics and careers. The International news educates kids about countries and cultures around the globe. Through the Sports section, students can learn everything from statistics to geography. Even the comics and weather can teach valuable lessons in the hands of a trained educator.
At a cost of just $100, JIE can provide an entire class one copy of the Winston-Salem Journal per student each week for the whole school year. For schools that cannot afford this, we try to arrange sponsorships and donations so that all children will have the opportunity to participate.
